And, it's reasonably priced at $129 (USD) for what it is capable of. You can add frames, textures, and a wide variety of light leaks to photos for added effects.Įxposure X7 is an absolute gem and definitely worth your time to check out. Lastly, I must mention the absolutely wonderful amount of overlays available directly in Exposure X7. It's great fun to play with the filters and even use them as a starting point for more exploration/editing. The filters available in Exposure X7 is quite extensive. This photo above had great bokeh to begin with, but it was great fun to 'shape' the bokeh even better. I love the bokeh tools and presets in Exposure X7. I am generally a clean and organized person, but my computer is another story, indeed! But, with Exposure X7 you have plenty of ways to organize your photos into collections and even by camera, and you can search with ease. There are some great organizational tools in Exposure X7 that, unfortunately, I haven't gotten far with yet, though I did start. I'm not sure if they've changed much over the years, but I love the creative possibilities of vignetting.but, maybe I'm just weird. The thing that I loved about my first introduction to Exposure was the vignetting tools, and they are so easy and fun to use. This is great for touch ups like red-eye removal and to soften skin, but also for adding something like selective warmth, via a 'brush' as I'm doing here with my two doggies.Īnd oh my, that new tool in Exposure X7 that I mentioned previously is really fantastic! The polygon selection tool is easy to use, and extremely, well, useful! One of the really great things about Exposure X7 is the layering system. In this article, however, I am using it as a standalone. I should note here that Exposure X7 can be used as a standalone editor, and even as a plug-in for Photoshop or even the aforementioned Lightroom. Lightroom is another great tool, but it does take it's time. ![]() And, perhaps, I will go back on my earlier statement and say that that is the one clear difference I see between Exposure X7 and Adobe's Lightroom. But, basic, it is not. The amount of editing tools available in Exposure X7 is vast. Everything you could want from the strict basics of auto adjustments, to curves adjustments, bokeh, and vignettes, and much, much more. I think the one thing that I noticed right away is that exposure is fast. And, to be clear, I am not going to go into a full comparison between the two in this article.Įxposure is, basically, a non-destructive raw photo editor and organizer. I also have enjoyed Lightroom, but as I see it, it can certainly be a replacement. Exposure X7 does what Lightroom does, and it does it quite exceptionally. It also had wonderful tools for vignetting.Īnd now Exposure X7 is really such a robust software, with full-fledged and fantastic photo editing capabilities, many more stock films added, and there's one new tool that really shines.a polygon selection tool that can be used to quickly select and separate an object in a photo.īut first of all, if you're here comparing Exposure to Adobe's Lightroom, perhaps looking for an alternative to subscription pricing, then you're in luck. And what struck me then was it's sleek interface, ease of use, and mimicked film types. I can't recall what version it was in when I was introduced to it, but I'm sure it was only a few years from infancy. Soon I was looking at the rest of their product line.Īh Exposure.I was wowed back then, and am happy to see it's gotten much, much better. They had just released version 7 of Eye Candy at the time, and it was pretty sweet (pun intended). But, back then, I was initially asked about reviewing their Eye Candy software (an effects plug-in for Photoshop that is still very relevant). ![]() The company was still going under the name Alien Skin Software, now it is simply Exposure Software, named for it's flagship product. I recall my first look at Exposure, oh about 12 years ago.maybe. This program is perfect for that continuing tradition. ![]() Since I gave up my hardware sequencer for a software-based one many years ago, it's almost a necessity now to see my sounds and be able to manipulate them graphically. At these resolutions, it's very difficult to see the text clearly.įor those of you who haven't made the move to a software-based sampler, Kontakt may just be the one to motivate you to do it. Most sound designers have their screen size set at 1024x768 or higher. The biggest complaint I have is with the small font size. This is a great feature for matching the sample to the tempo of the song, or trying something interesting such as bringing the sample to a complete halt with the pitch still ringing. Time Machine also uses granular synthesis, and allows for playback of a sample in its original pitch while changing its length. The Tone Machine is a granular synthesizer, which will analyze a sample and then provide several knobs such as tune, smooth, speed, and format to adjust that sample. Kontakt's two most distinctive features are its Tone Machine and Time Machine modules. One surprise was the low CPU usage when using multi-track software with numerous plug-ins running, I'm always looking at the meter, and I found Kontakt's effects to be easy on the overhead. Kontakt's intuitive control panels offer users several options in developing their sound.Ī great selection of effects processors, including distortion, saturation, lo-fi, compression, stereo enhancer, delay, chorus, flanger, and reverb satisfies even the most discerning musician - they all sounded first-rate. Envelope Follower translates a sample into a control signal which can then be applied to other samples to give them the same characteristic. Step modulation allows for 32 steps of custom modulation effects, Glide (or portamento, in more musical terms) adds a sliding pitch transition between consecutive notes. ![]() AHDSR (Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain, and Release) and Flexible are the two standard envelope types, and DBD (Decay time 1, Break, Decay time 2) is an envelope specifically designed to affect pitch. There are three types of envelopes on board which can add some nice depth to your sounds, all with the ability to stretch over several minutes. The LFOs come fully equipped with the standard options: sine, triangle, sawtooth, rectangle, random, and a multi setting to combine them for some interesting effects. Everything is depicted graphically, giving you a distinct perspective of what's actually happening. Other parameters are highly useable LFOs, envelopes, and modulators can be controlled via MIDI or separate controller. Keymapping and multi-creation is simple ranges and layered patches are easily established with a simple click and drag. As samplers go, Kontakt has all the standard features you'd expect. However, the folks at NI have announced a direct-from-disc extension which, by the time you read this, should be available for download. Like normal hardware samplers, the real limitation is the amount of RAM available when loading samples. Output capability ranges from 32 channels when used as a plug-in to 16 as a stand-alone unit. Kontakt currently boasts a polyphony of up to 256 stereo voices per instrument with the capability to run 16 instruments at once. NI plans to add support for Emu very soon. Kontakt can load a multitude of formats, including Akai S1000/S3000, Gigasampler, SF2, Battery, Halion, EXS, Reaktor, LM4, and 8- to 32-bit AIFF/WAV files. Drums, percussion, bass, guitar, piano, and synth samples are keymapped so you can get started immediately. The program ships with over 3 gigabytes of playable samples. Additionally, numerous filter types, modulation capabilities with real-time display, onboard effects, granular time-stretching and re-synthesis options, and a loop editor round out this program's ability to play back standard samples and shape fresh sounds. Accessing sample CDs or sound files stored on the hard drive is easy, with a simple drag and drop to the rack window instantly loading them for use. It combines a virtual rack of sound modules which depict your loaded samples, with an interface similar to that of Windows Explorer. ![]() Kontakt is designed as a stand-alone VST 2.0 or DXi instrument for use with Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and MacOS 9.0 or higher. ![]() This generous retention rate makes Usenet a winner in our eyes! In this beginner’s guide, we’ll bring some clarity to this confusing adventure so you can spend more time regaining your memory, and deciding whether or not you’re an Apocalypse Cop or rock star.īelow we’ll detail the most important things to know in the opening hours of Disco Elysium. The obscurity of its introduction can leave some players scratching their head at the start as they make sense of the the game’s systems and plot. Aside from the mechanical impediment to the action, it will likely prompt the player to think more from their character’s perspective, instead of from the view of a player treating the game like a consequence-free playground. Using any of these techniques can help a Dungeons & Dragons game become just as immersive, funny, and unpredictable as Disco Elysium, a video game that prompts many DMs to step up their own game in how they run their campaigns.Disco Elysium is a hazy murder mystery that takes a few hours to develop into a clear picture. There are many fun D&D character build ideas for evil characters, but they should still be fully realized characters, not thinly drawn excuses for arbitrary troublemaking. (function() ) Ī Dungeon Master can apply this technique to D&D when a player wants to publicly slay a noble who annoys them, or openly rob a weapons merchant in a large city-state, by requiring a very high difficulty Charisma saving throw to represent the character acting against their own better judgment to allow greed or passion to overcome logic, ethics, or self-preservation. By emulating the Disco Elysium approach to skills, as well as the developers’ thoroughly fleshed-out scenario planning, DMs can give their campaigns a bit of Disco style, which includes allowing for spontaneous humor and player agency to ensure every session is memorable. Although Disco Elysium is a scripted work, the sheer volume of branching possibilities presented by the game offers an ideal rendition of a well-prepared DM who is also comfortable with thinking on the fly. Instead, the game focused on skills, and it used those skills in unexpected ways, a technique DMs can copy to enrich D&D. ![]() ![]() Unlike D&D, combat is not the focus of Disco Elysium as there are few opportunities for players to solve problems with fisticuffs or gunplay. The 2019 release of Disco Elysium raised the bar for writing in RPG video games, and given its clear homages to tabletop RPGs, Dungeon Masters can borrow some of the Disco Elysium’s unconventional approaches to make Dungeons & Dragons campaigns better than ever. ![]() You will certainly participate in some interesting tasks, such as installing new machines, repairing defects, setting up the machine for some specialty work, etc. The most important thing is to not get carried away with your answer.
